Heading to the Fox Theater in Oakland to see Phil & Bob. Never seen a Ratdog or a P&F show, so I assume there will be some songs I'm not familiar with. Also, I know nothing about Dark Star Orchestra (other than watching Billy's somewhat critical comments that someone posted here), but apparently the lead guitarist is from DSO. We'll see how it all works out.

I know a good chunk of the Forum will shake their heads in dismay (you know who you are - "it was all downhill after (insert appropriate marker [Palo Alto /Olompali / Pigpen / Winterland / Keith / Jerry]", but when Bob & Phil are playing conveniently my neck of the woods (actually, on my commute home), it's hard to pass up. I can promise you that I WILL keep a close eye on Bobby to see if he checks his watch. "Damn, almost 10pm already... I'm going to miss the local news if we don't wrap this up quick!"

Also, hoping I have good karma on my side. People have been offering >$100 for tix, and I sold an extra ticket for face value to someone willing to pay much more. Giving myself props here, but I personally don't feel good about making money on a ticket. Plus, I gave the buyer a DVD's worth of Dead shows, so in my view he came up way ahead on the deal!

as far as I'm concered, it was "all downhill" after the industrial revolution. That being said, there was still some decent music made post IR, the dead and thousands of other bands included. the dead were decent musicians. the new incarnation of phil, bobby, etc are also decent musicians. no difference between the two except for subjective sentimental attachments like i have for my mom's tits.

I would LOVE to see Phil and Bob play with the DSO guy. I'm assuming they know what they're getting into... he can mimic Jerry all he wants as far as I'm concerned. I'll bet it will put a spring in Phil's step and make Bobby actually do some work!

Have a great time! Wish I were going. Were exactly IS the Fox Theater? I don't recall ever hearing about that one.

JOTS, Another Planet has the Fox which was indeed recently extensively renovated and renovated. They did a great job and it's certainly keeping in line with other great Fox theatres (St. Louis, Atlanta, etc). CHeck out some of the pics:

With the Paramount and Fox essentially right next to each other (and just next to Oaksterdam), they've done a good job revitalizing that area.

are they related to the one in Atlanta? I used to go to the Fox in Boulder quite a bit but I didnt figure there was any relation. That one certainly wasnt any great peice of restored architecture

Back in the day, Fox was a national chain of theatres and over time many closed, bought by others, etc. The guy that runs the Golden State Theatre here in Monterey (Warren Dewey - engineer on Waiting for Columbus and former housemate of Lowell) has toured the one closed up and boarded in Inglewood. I know, Inglewood - but inside was gorgeous and very little damage done inside. There is a nice little Fox in Salinas.

that's a cool link. We have the Fourth avenue Theater up here - they no linger play movies or have shows and the conservative majority up here absolutely REFUSED to allow any government help to keep this place from being sold which could end up it's demise. What a shame as it is pretty much the ONLY thing other than log cabins displaying anything of historical value up here ( Anchorage being such a young city ). That's one thing that makes me sad, the cookie cutter box store thing - architecture is Dead.

after looking at the pics and noticing the coming attractions for the venue I seen that The Austrailian Pink Floyd Show is appearing on Sept.22. I highly reccomend seeing this if the chance arises. Seen them at the Palace Th. here in OH a while back. Better than a DSO show IMHO was amazed, Music, Vocals Effects all spot on!, One Quirk though instead of a flying Pig its a flying Kangaroo funny as hell being flamb'e as we were.

Fox is only a few blocks from the Paramount, on Telegraph near Broadway. It was originally a cinema, but I believe it was closed for many years - since the late 60's or early 70's, and just reopened after major renovation earlier this year.

I know where the paramount is, I'll have to scratch my memory to see if I can picture this. I remember my Dad taking me to the Grand Lake theatre and being amazing how huge it was AFTER being subdivided and wondering what movies must have been like back in the day

I've seen DSO several times and John emulates jerry in many ways I wouldn't say he mimics the fatman but if you close your eyes the the resemblance is uncanny I believe your in for a treat. This is a show I only dreamed about 3-4 years ago at my first DSO show. Hope they make there way east soon and I get the chance to see magic preformed. Nothing can or will ever replace Garcia, But if there is a man in the world who can get you close to that vibe John can. Enjoy and please post back w/ your review
Peace, Hippie64

hippie - aren't you are from the Richmond area?

DSO is due for a trip through VA soon. They did some great shows at the National in Richmond and the NORVA in Norfolk.

I try and take Rob Koritz (he drums Mickey) out golfing every time they come through Tidewater, but I think the recent knee surgery is going to preclude that this time around.

sounds like it could be a great show in my opinion. John is a decent guitarist and at times can sound UNCANNILY just like Jerry. you should have a great time and i sincerely hope you do.

good Karma on selling the ticket and giving some music to the buyer. those good vibes will come back around for you (though i realize that is not why you did it). nicely done cosmic!!!

be safe and have a great show!!!
